PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

After several months in development, our new, dropper-post compatible seat bag is here. The Black Dragon is the first dropper-post seat bag that doesn't rely on fragile stabilizers or racks. We've partnered up with Wolf Tooth Components and utilized their Valais stanchion clamp along with our proven RailWing technology to make an all-new bag that is rock solid and extremely durable. You can also use the Black Dragon on non-dropper posts as a smaller seat bag option - simply order the Standard Post model.

Until now, if you wanted to use both a dropper post and a bikepacking seat bag, you had two options: Tape your post stanchion, use a standard seat bag, and render your post inoperable; or use one of a few rack-type stabilizer systems on the market. We wanted a bag that would maintain the dropper function, easily survive crashes, and be more than bomber enough to handle the type of riding one might do on a six-inch-travel, dropper-equipped trailbike. The Black Dragon checks all these boxes. The way it works is simple yet ingenious.

The Wolf Tooth Components Valais is a small, Delrin collar that snaps onto the dropper's stanchion. It serves several functions: It provides a place for the Black Dragon's post strap and prevents stanchion wear; its recessed bottom prevents seal damage when the post is compressed; and it does these things while only limiting dropper travel by 25mm (most posts have 125-150mm of travel). We designed the Black Dragon to strap to the Valais at the very top of your dropper - using the Valais with other seat bags would sacrifice most or all of your dropper's travel, as they strap to the post several inches down.

Our proven RailWing clamps onto the saddle rails and provides a solid mounting point for the main bag, while also eliminating lateral sway and providing quick-release removal, as with our traditional Coconino seat bag. This Black Dragon-specific version of the RailWing bolts with stainless hardware and 3M texturized rubber to the back of the saddle rails and can stay on the saddle full-time, even when you're not using the bag. To install the Black Dragon, you simply engage the cinch strap loops while pushing the bag into the RailWing, clip in the RailWing straps, and fasten the seatpost strap. The Black Dragon detaches in under five seconds flat, with no tiresome lacing of straps over the rails.

The RailWing system has some pretty unique features. First of all, it virtually eliminates lateral and vertical movement of the seat bag. The Black Dragon doesn't sway and shake around on even the roughest trails. The RailWing is designed to be narrower than virtually every saddle on the market, so it is almost impossible to damage in a crash. If you do somehow manage to break it, the system is redundant, and the load-bearing strap will still retain the bag. The small bolts that hold the RailWing in place are not load bearing, and can't vibrate loose; the whole vertical load is taken by the over-rail strap. There are no moving parts to squeak or creak. Finally, the RailWing system functions as a quick-release attachment, and the bag loads up and detaches super quickly!

SPECIFICATIONS

Weight: 385 grams / 13.7oz. Capacity: 5-7 liters, depending on how far you roll it up. Made in Colorado, USA.

COMPATIBILITY

For dropper-post use: Requires a minimum of 5" (without Valais installed) from the saddle rails to the nearest point on the rear tire. Remember, if you have a full-suspension, the rear wheel moves - check clearances with the dropper post AND rear shock fully compressed! If you are close and need just a bit more room, you can slide the Valais down your dropper stanchion to limit dropper travel as needed... but this negates the entire reason we designed this bag the way we did. The Black Dragon utilizes 1" (25mm) of your dropper post's stanchion. DO NOT USE THE BLACK DRAGON BAG ON A DROPPER POST WITHOUT THE VALAIS! The seat bag will not function properly and you will damage your post.

The Valais works with any dropper post using internal cable/hose routing ("Stealth"-style). A few externally-routed droppers will work as well - heavily dependent on cable location, must be in front of the post as opposed to the side or rear! When checking out, you will be required to select a Valais size, 25mm or 26mm.

-Valais 25mm: RockShox Reverb Stealth, RaceFace Turbine, Easton Haven, Giant Contact (internal), Specialized Command Post, KS (non-27.2 with internal or forward external routing, Other 24.75-25.25mm (cable routing dependent).

-Valais 26mm: Fox Transfer, Thomson Covert, Other 26-26.5mm (cable routing dependent).

For standard-post use: Requires a minimum of 6" from the saddle rails to the nearest point on the rear tire. Remember, if you have a full-suspension, the rear wheel moves - check clearances with rear shock fully compressed! The RailWing works on every saddle we have tested EXCEPT for Brooks leather saddles (it does work on the Cambium). Do not purchase for use on a Brooks leather saddle!

HOW TO USE: WITH DROPPER POST

To install the Black Dragon on a dropper post: 1) Mount the RailWing, without its strap and buckles, to the back (slanted) portion of your saddle rails. Make sure bolts are snug, but don't go nuts. 2) Slide the RailWing strap and buckles through the rails and velcro to the top of the RailWing. 3) Install the Wolf Tooth Valais on your post, as high as possible. 4) Pack your Black Dragon (see below) and roll the closure down tightly. Clip the roll into the compression straps near the nose of the bag and cinch down. 5) Push the loaded and closed Black Dragon into the RailWing, engaging the cinch strap loops over the RailWing hooks, keeping the bag centered, and keeping the nose cone and seatpost strap aligned with the Valais. Clip the RailWing straps into the female buckles on the main bag; secure the seatpost strap tightly around the Valais. Tighten the cinch strap and RailWing straps tightly, and go ride. When freshly packed, you may need to retighten all straps after a bit, as the contents compress.

Like most bikepacking bags, the Black Dragon depends somewhat upon its contents for shape and stability. Stuffable items work best - clothing, tents, bivys, sleeping bags, etc. You can wrap other items in soft goods to mute edges and increase packability. Load heaviest items into the nose, near the seatpost; make sure to fill out the nose cone and top of the bag with gear. Stuff items tightly and don't be afraid to use those compression straps - they are there for cinching things down!

HOW TO USE: WITH STANDARD POST

To install the Black Dragon on a standard post: 1) Mount the RailWing, without its strap and buckles, to the back (slanted) portion of your saddle rails. Make sure bolts are snug, but don't go nuts. 2) Slide the RailWing strap and buckles through the rails and velcro to the top of the RailWing. 3) Pack your Black Dragon (see below) and roll the closure down tightly. Clip the roll into the compression straps near the nose of the bag and cinch down. 4) Push the loaded and closed Black Dragon into the RailWing, keeping the bag centered. Clip the RailWing straps into the female buckles on the main bag; secure the seatpost strap tightly around the post, at least a few inches down from the saddle clamp. Tighten the RailWing straps tightly, and go ride. When freshly packed, you may need to retighten all straps after a bit, as the contents compress.
