PRODUCT BRIEF

The Black Dragon is our ground-breaking dropper-post compatible seat bag. Go ride trail the way you always do - the Black Dragon will be rock solid. Also works as a smaller, non-dropper seat bag option!

  • Designed for dropper posts, also works on standard posts
  • No fragile rack-style stabilizers
  • No sway or movement on even the roughest trails
  • Extremely durable, waterproof and water-resistant materials - more details here.

"...Thoughts on the Black Dragon [dropper seat] bag. In short, it's bomber and rock solid. I love it... It's the only [seat bag] I've ever used that I could pack full of food and not have the bag shaking around at all beneath me. Kudos!" -Kurt Refsnider, AZT 300 record-holder

"Loving the [RailWing] the most - everyone seems to miss the mark big time on bag stabilization, it's either over complicated, over built, difficult to install, or under done and super wobbly. The simple RailWing system is phenomenal and holds the bag super stable even on rough terrain or rhythmic out of the saddle climbing. Anyway enough gushing, thanks again!" -Steve M., CO

"The Black Dragon dropper bag is flawless in operation. Seems to stay put no matter what kind of crazy drops I do and never notice it shifting around on me when picking my way through technical sections." -Christopher R, Iowa

BEDROCK ORIGINAL TECH

  • RailWing stabilizer = rock solid on the trail, virtually unbreakable, quick release and attachment at camp; circa 2015
  • First dropper-post compatible seat bag that doesn't rely on a fragile rack stabilizer system; circa 2017

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Black Dragon is our ground-breaking, dropper-specific seat bag design. The first dropper seat bag on the market that doesn't rely on a fragile rack-style stabilizer, the Black Dragon holds up to aggressive trail riding on modern trail bikes. Drops, jumps, and high-speed technical chunder – whatever you throw at it, the Black Dragon rides absolutely solid, with no movement, sway, or bounce.

The Black Dragon utilizes our original, long-proven RailWing technology, and the Valais post clamp, made by Wolf Tooth Components. The RailWing is a lightweight aluminum stabilizer that mounts to your saddle rails; it prevents bag movement on even the roughest trails, and allows for very quick installation and removal of the bag at camp. The Valais is a Delrin plastic clamp that mounts to your dropper post's stanchion, providing a dedicated mounting point for the Black Dragon and protecting your post's stanchion and wiper seal.

We designed the Black Dragon to maintain dropper operation, easily survive crashes, and handle real MTB riding with aplomb. Customers across the globe have used the Black Dragon on some of the planet's burliest terrain and have let us know we succeeded in meeting those goals!

The Black Dragon can also be used on standard (non-dropper) posts. If you're looking for a larger seat bag for standard posts, check out our Coconino.

SPECIFICATIONS

Weight: 385 grams / 13.7oz. Capacity: 5-7 liters, depending on how far you roll it up. Made in Colorado, USA.

COMPATIBILITY

For dropper-post use: Requires a minimum of 5.25" (without Valais installed) from the saddle rails to the nearest point on the rear tire. Remember, if you have a full-suspension, the rear wheel moves - check clearances with the dropper post AND rear shock fully compressed! If you are close and need just a bit more room, you can slide the Valais down your dropper stanchion to limit dropper travel as needed. The Valais utilizes 1" (25mm) of your dropper post's stanchion. DO NOT USE THE BLACK DRAGON BAG ON A DROPPER POST WITHOUT THE VALAIS! The bag will not function properly and you will damage your post.

The Valais works with any dropper post using internal cable/hose routing ("Stealth"-style). Very few externally-routed droppers will work as well. When checking out, you will be required to select a Valais size, 25mm or 26mm.

  • Valais 25mm: RockShox Reverb Stealth, RaceFace Turbine, Easton Haven, Giant Contact (internal), Specialized Command Post, 9Point8 Fall Line, X-Fusion Manic, Other 24.75-25.25mm (cable routing dependent).
  • Valais 26mm: Fox Transfer, Thomson Covert, Crank Bros. Highline, Other 26-26.5mm (cable routing dependent).
  • **As of 2019, some popular bikes (Specialized in particular) are being spec'ed with a Tranz-X post that has a 28mm stanchion diameter. Wolf Tooth does not currently make a 28mm Valais clamp - we are working with them on a possible solution.**

For standard-post use (or use on a dropper you're going to leave fully extended): Requires a minimum of 6.25" from the saddle rails to the nearest point on the rear tire. Remember, if you have a full-suspension, the rear wheel moves - check clearances with rear shock fully compressed!

The RailWing is compatible with almost any saddle out there - essentially anything with "standard"-shaped rails. It does not fit: Brooks and Selle Anatomica leather saddles (it does work on the Brooks Cambium and the new Selle Anatomica X2), Fizik Kurve saddles. Carbon rails are NOT a good idea (this is true with any seat bag design).

HOW TO USE: WITH DROPPER POST

For installation instructions (very important!), watch the video above.

Step-by-step instructions:

To install the Black Dragon on a dropper post:

1) Mount the RailWing, without the strap, on the rear (slanted) portion of your saddle rails. Make sure bolts are snug, but don't go nuts.

2) Slide the RailWing strap and buckles through the rails and velcro to the top of the RailWing.

3) Install the Wolf Tooth Valais on your post, as high as possible.

4) Pack your Black Dragon (see below) and roll the closure down tightly. Clip the roll into the compression straps near the nose of the bag and cinch down.

5) Push the loaded and closed Black Dragon into the RailWing, engaging the Cinch Strap loops over the RailWing hooks, keeping the bag centered, and keeping the nose cone and seatpost strap aligned with the Valais. Clip the RailWing straps into the female buckles on the main bag; secure the seatpost strap tightly around the Valais. Tighten the cinch strap and RailWing straps firmly, and go ride. When freshly packed, you may need to retighten all straps after a bit, as the contents compress.

Like most bikepacking bags, the Black Dragon depends somewhat upon its contents for shape and stability. Stuffable items work best - clothing, tents, bivys, sleeping bags, etc. You can wrap other items in soft goods to mute edges and increase packability. Load heaviest items into the nose, near the seatpost; make sure to fill out the nose cone and top of the bag with gear. Stuff items tightly and don't be afraid to use those compression straps - they are there for cinching things down!

Tighten the RailWing straps tightly, and go ride. When freshly packed, you may need to retighten all straps after a bit, as the contents compress.
